I don't know if this is a taboo question or not, if so just ignore it, but I'm curious about where you all are from.

Feel free to be as specific or as vague as you want, or to tell me off if I've broken some rule I didn't know about.

I'm from the NJ/NY area; I'm going to college in NY state, and I'm also partly from Maryland (that's where my home is between semesters).

"Take me back to the place where I first saw the light
To the sweet sunny south, take me home,
Where the mockingbirds sing me to rest every night,
Oh why was I tempted to roam?"

The sweet sunny south
The gateway to the Smokies, Knoxville TN
The bowels of New Jersey, Elizabeth NJ
The Big Island of Hawaii. Hilo, Pahoa, Kapoho, Keaau, Kailua-Kona

I'm still a southern boy at heart.

IRP, that's so funny. I left in 86 with a BA, and never went back. still consider myself a hawkeye, though.

I understand that everything's changed. I do suspect though, that the Airliner is still there for honest jelly jar pints!

Oh, and no one make any comments about "Gee, what a shock. Hollow likes watching sweaty men grapple on mat". It's way beneath all of your standards.

I would never make such comments. You forget, I was there in the Bannoch/Gable era myself. Never actually attended a match, but we were the best...

I was an english major. Had some great classes, including writing classes with John Irving, and with Kurt Vonnegut.

I got to see Ed and Lou Banach at the NCAA nationals at Princeton in 83 or 84. Amazing.

Also got to play golf with Dan out here a few years back. Friend I used to work with was the local Alumni club president and hosted an annual golf tournament that Dan would occasionally play in. Intense dude.

that's 2 ees, y'all!

Best basketball game I ever saw, or will see, was NC State in Triple OT to win ACC Championship against Maryland in Greensboro to advance to NCAAs (game that changed the rule re only 1 admittee from a conference) where they went on to win the Championship (and beat UCLA and some lanky red-headed deadhead in the semis).

GO PACK!

Summerfield, NC. .... SALUTE!

like the say, it ain't the heat.....

You can blame the missing "e" on the NC Public School System...

GO PACK is right!!!
My alma mater and hopefully back on the right track in basketball (football too, for that matter).

I remeber that NCSU/Maryland game. Probably one of the best NCAA basketball games ever - at least until that one played in Albequerque sometime around 1983!

Kudzu... if only you could use it for fuel NC would be the richest state in the Union. (Still haven't gotten over that "War of Northern Aggression")
Lately the bamboo has been on the rize - it seems to be just as tough.

North Cacalacky - NASCAR, moonshine, bluegrass, and BBQ!!!

so my brother-in-law went to state for football during the micheals and holtz years with one of my biggest memory of the time being shooting hoops with david thompson, monty towe, burelson, among others...

coke or not, david thompson was a b-ball god!!!

and after four years in raleigh he spent the next decade plus teaching/coaching in the north brunswick school district outside of wilmington...btw: in b-ball they would go up against a guy called jordon or something like that...:-)

That's the team! I went to NC State b-ball camp in those days (Norm Sloan) and Duke (Bill Foster) as well. Had Monte Towe as counsellor - who is now back on bench as asst to Sidney Lowe.

Clemson - you know why their fans always wear orange?

To go to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and back to road crew on Monday through Friday.

Best hit I ever saw in a football game was Woody Hayes against a Clemson player....

funny, we might have attended the same camp...

I always liked norm sloan, he was really nice to me...(though he couldn't due magic tricks like holtz but on the positive side he never became a domer)

I was fortunate to spend summers in raleigh during those years and would only get down for a football game or two in the fall...usually against duke either home or away...

I have some good memories of the campus, carter-finley and reynolds coliseum...

monte towe, must be one of the only players to get signed based on another player (i.e., thompson) the way he did...

Hey, I was in the Brickyard that night in 1983. REM opened for The English Beat for second night in row at Page over at Duke. Went first night and left after REM set second night to be in Raleigh with friends and family. My mom and her dad both went to state. My mom actually graduated from Broughton High in Raleigh. As I've mentioned before, in my office is not only the Jerry Playbill from the Lunt-Fontane, but a pic of DT scoring over Len Elmore in that game and two DT autographs. Still my all time favorite player.

My wife and I actually kind of began our relationship at Spring Garden. We met at the place we worked and we got off at noon on Friday's. For the first year we went to Spring Garden every Friday for lunch and beers and then to the house for other fun...

well, you're definitely infected with the wanderlust bug! i knew a few folks in the ESL world who taught in SA, and all of them did it just for the money, which compared to other countries is quite high, however, none of them were able to live there all that long, and i think most of them broke their contract and left early; from what i understand (and things could very well be different these days), you live in a sorta gated compound, rather than out in the community, and certain activities are definitely restricted, and i would be surprised if your internet activity wasn't closely monitored!

Certainly not a job description from our parents' generation! I hear it at my company, but I can't honestly say I understand it. Seems like it'd make a great bumper sticker, though: "Visualize Virtual Servers".

Not sure if you're in Evanston, but I lived there for 2 years while I went to grad school.

sounds good bluedevil about getting together...

and that menu looks killer, I shouldn't have looked at it prior to lunch...based on that menu it looks like I am hitting my local polk street cajun breakfast and lunch place which I normal pass on due the wait but it should be OK this pm...

so I definitely will be checking out your friend's place soon along with passing the word...

Hey SC - Next weekend I'll be heading to this:

http://www.pacificcoastbrewing.com/springtaste2009.htm

Entry price is pretty steep, but I only do these 2x/year. It's a hell of a lot of fun (pretty much kills your afternoon & evening, and I mean that in a good way).

Fun City or The City of Dope(greetings from Too Short)...I grew up just south of Fun City.....now reside in the thriving Metropolis that is Chico, CA. Home of the best beer in America.

City of dope, I call it oak
Cant be broke, selling coke
Fat ropes, shattered hopes
Fresh cars and all that dope
Baseheads keep the trade alive
Nobody know about a 9 to 5
Everybodys just trying to survive
You need a gun, cant use those knives
You got a bullet? well just pull it
And if you trip, get pistol-whipped
By a psychomaniac sick in his head
Wanna be a gangster, now hes dead
His brother took over, aint no sweat
Bought a new drop-top white corvette
Now hes buying keys, making gs
And all the girls say wont you please
Take me in the city of dope

See Im hard as hell, no ghetto tale
You play a gun, but the game is real
You want to stop my money, how?
You keep smoking, Im selling out
Its called the city of dope, might be your town
Get a piece of the rock, turn your life around
So cool, dont even trip
You got the sack, get on the tip
A resident in the city of dope
And every day Im selling coke
Im never broke, I dont smoke
I sold a rock and made you have a stroke
Pay cold cash you know, I wont need bruno
Ill hit you with my gat and then I wont come back
Like my peanut butter top with the candy paint
All the high school tenders drop down and faint
In the city of dope

Life in a coke town, heard it before
Think its all been said, but its so much more
Its like midnight, slanging rock
Task force just hit the block
Time to make a move, the spot got hot
You chase a cop, homeboy why not?
She lit the match and light the crack
Aint giving no bitches no kind of slack
Or if youre playing the game, youre thinking the same
Goddamn that rock cocaine
Ive seen a lot of my friends go off that pipe
And every night smoke coke thats white
So when you get up, man, there you go
You and that pipe just dogging the hoes
In the city of dope, and the story goes
Want to be like free, breaking millions of loaves
In the city of dope, where the color is gold
On your neck, and your fingers, and your brand new rolls
Enough said, but my rap wont end
Its on a one way trip to san quinten
Like you my friend, aint nothing new
You want to grind that dope til its way past two
You say its not easy, that youre so hard
Sporting gold tone zs, not credit cards
Got clout turn em out, you got bitches
You say youre not fake, but Im telling you this is
The city of dope, might be your world
Get a beeper homeboy and just sell that girl
Im from the town called the city of dope
It couldnt be saved by john the pope
So go on, live your life of crime
The beatll keep beating while I say my rhyme
In the city of dope

Smoking weed, rolling em fat
You wonder where the boy learned to act like that
Hey was raised in the ghetto and felt the need
To roll a fat joint and smoke that weed
But the tale goes on and years went by
Another drug came and the boy got high
Ever since that day, he just wasnt the same
Where I come from, we call it rock cocaine
Where you come from, you might call it crack
But wherever he went, you see he never came back
I tried to tell the motherfucker, but he dont know
I say to coke, pimp that ho
I dont live in a mansion but I drive a benz
Cut to the turf and collect my ends
Say look here freak, kick me down
I dont have time to talk right now
Got to go to, my next hoe
And get kicked down, a little more
Left right left, down the street
Getting paid freak by freak
There you see me, there you dont
You wonder will i, or wont
Is it yes, is it no?
But does it really matter you freaky hoe?
In the city of dope

Saturn - actually lived just around the crater from Sun Ra.

Currently visiting this celestial sphere in Monterey area - work just a stone's throw from Laguna Seca. I suggest the calamari (the sand dabs aren't too bad either)

so skydawg I lived in knoxville in 1987...KNOXVILLE, it all comes flooding back...

the plan was to obtain work and transfer to UT for grad school but it turned into a story closer to bukowski's factotum than anything else...

first I was the only male at one of the city's last answering services...basically I spent time avoiding calls to various medical groups due to each doctor having multiple pages of complex date/time instructions and I found it easier/safer to let the calls pass to another messenger than to deal with any consequences from the caller and/or the client...so I skipped the medical calls, which were the majority of calls, and took messages for a couple of florists and the sportscaster lindsey nelson...lindsey kept getting calls from a brooklyn pizza parlor...(nah, lindsey was a class act though now I know why he thought his colorful patched sport coats were in style, it is because he wore them first in knoxville where they were the rage)...btw: I was told tales about docs going berserk about calls/messages but didn't give it much thought until a plus four wearing urologist showed up with driver in hand threatening one of the messengers...though he backed off after seeing her since she was hired for her voice and not size, which certainly came in handy that day)

then I found a part time gig with a husband and wife IT firm in Karns outside of Oak Ridge...I took the job under the condition that I be paid on the first friday in order to have my biked shipped ...so for four days I walked the 14-miles each way to work...basically walking 8-hours a day to work 4-hours (in winter)...on thursday, the husband said he was going to give me a ride home and I started feeling good about the tide turning and everything working out in TN only to be dropped off at the main road less than a mile from their residence...prior to being put out of the car I was sternly told that as a "company" they have strict pay policies and that I would be paid on the same two week cycle as "everyone" else (all three of us) in eight days time and not one...I called the woman after my long walk home and she gave me the line: "we hired you because of your enthusiasm and the feeling that you would give your all and now this demand for pay..."..."the pay on the first Friday was a condition of my hire and if walking 28-miles a day for a part-time job is not giving my all then I don't know what is...goodbye"...the next call was from the "employment" agency reminding me that I owed them for finding me the job...funny, twenty-two years later I still owe them.

all of my employment "fun" was followed by an ugly accident at beautiful cades cove at the entrance to the smokies...way too long of a story...just glad everyone survived and also that the marysville er doc went to the other UT (austin) since he saw my tejas dl and called in a surgeon to fix me up..."I hate to say it but you will be looking like frankenstein if I let the doctor on duty work on you...hook-em-horns"

and I forgot a good part of the story...in order to move into a friend's rental house he told the owner, a woman in her sixties, that I was his mentally challenged little brother, since for some unexplained reason she only wanted one tenant for a two bedroom house...so I was known as "the boy" during my stay there and had to play the part anytime she was around..."how is the boy doing?"..."is it good for a boy in that condition to run?"..."does the boy know how to rake leaves?"...

I do miss seeing the sunrise from clingman's dome, among other great things!!! and I still read the sentinel for some strange reason...

sorry, a double mocha ramble...plus the 70-01-03 that I am groovin' to helped the flow...
